ALL THINGS FAMILY

Kids and Pets CAN exist together in the same household, and having BOTH can be a problem or a pleasure, depending on how you as a parent handle the responsibility.

Do's and don'ts around dogs

The Humane Society of the United States gives these tips on a successful meeting
of canine and human:

* Always ask permission to pet a dog. Then let the dog sniff the back of your
hand in order to identify you.
* Never touch a dog without letting it see and sniff you.
See a neighbor's dog sitting in the car? Even if the dog knows you, and you have petted
him before, never reach inside the window. The dog could think he's on guard and defend
his territory.
* Don't approach a strange dog, especially not one that is confined or restrained.
* Never run past or turn your back on a dog and run away. Its natural instinct is to chase.
* Don't make jerky movements, wave your arms, or scream even in play.
Such actions may provoke the dog's chase response.
* Don't stare into a dog's eyes because that's how dogs challenge each other to fight.
Always assume that a strange dog may see you as an intruder.

FACTS ABOUT CHILDREN AND PETS:

1.Pets can give children a sense of responsibility:

Yes, this is true. Children can learn to feed and water their animals and groom them and care for them. HOWEVER this is a responsibility that the parent must also supervise!! giving young children the total care of a pet is NOT WISE! Supervised care is the best choice, so that the animal will be fed appropriatel;y (not over fed or under fed) and so that the child's play time with the animal is careful and gentle.

2. Owning a pet can give a child self confidence. Yes, this is also true. It is a fact that when a child accepts care for another living being, that sense of responsibility allows the child to feel needed and important, these feelings are essential for the development of self confidence in children. Furthermore, children who may not be successful in school or in sports can benefit from owning a pet for whom they are responsible, since this is onearea where they can accomplish goals and achieve succcess, especially if they are involved in a sport which centers around their pet, such as dog shows or horse events. Even a local cat show or rabbit show or gerbil show can be of benefit to a child in raising the level of self confidence!

3. Pets can be healthy for children in many ways. Physically, a child who walks a dog on a daily basis is participating in a healthy activity that, if carried through, can lead to lifelong benefits for health. There is nothing as good for the body as walking, this activity relieves stress, improves heart function, improves circulation, and helps control weight by burning calories. The Mental health is also improved by a dailly walk, and the interaction with other people one meets when walking the dog is also beneficial. CAUTION; a young child should not walk the dog alone, no matter how gentle the dog may be,or how quiet the neighborhood, so get out there and participate in this healthy activity YOURSELF!
